Afro Innovation Group

Afro Innovation has been providing refugee support services to the people of Leicester and Leicestershire since 2006. This would not be possible without the many volunteers who have worked, and continue to work, on our behalf. Volunteers work side-by-side with staff supporting client services, administration, and communications.

Our service to the wider community continues to grow, and thus we have a continual need for more volunteers to join us. Perhaps you might consider joining us and using your expertise, knowledge and skills for the benefit of the wider community.

What our volunteers do

Casework volunteer:

Some volunteers work directly with refugees and asylum seekers and assist with the provision of services. For example, they may help with queries relating to welfare benefits, housing, education, employment, and health.

Administration volunteer:

Volunteers also support our administration team and work as administrative assistants or researchers.

Communications and fundraising volunteer:

These volunteers operate the organisation’s social media and support us with our fundraising.

How we support our volunteers

As a team environment, we provide volunteers with development opportunities, and we offer the training and support necessary to allow them to successfully contribute to making a difference to the lives of those who turn to us for help. No qualifications are required, simply a desire to help us in our objective to support others.

We have established a partnership with Job Centre Plus and other employment agencies to refer job seekers into our charity for work placements.  We receive four to five volunteers every month to support them get work experience. However, you do not need to be referred by the Job Centre to volunteer with us.

Volunteer roles are unpaid, but we can assist volunteers with their job-seeking (if relevant) and can provide them with a reference to gain employment.

What we expect from our volunteers

All volunteer roles require enthusiasm and an interest in the issues that affect refugees and asylum seekers.

We ask all volunteers to commit to 1 day a week and for a minimum of 3 months. Volunteer roles also require an understanding of the principles of confidentiality and data protection.

Where our volunteers work

We have offices in central Leicester where all volunteer work is carried out.
