On Saturday 21 March, we welcomed the Leicester community to the Salam Centre for a special Eid Heritage Celebration, delivered as part of the Afro Heritage Project.

The event brought together people of all ages to mark Eid through culture, food, music and shared experience, creating a space where heritage could be celebrated as something lived, shared and continually evolving.

Throughout the afternoon, the room was full of activity. Families gathered around tables for henna, children took part in hands-on cultural activities, and conversations flowed across generations and backgrounds. Alongside this, guests shared food, music and traditions reflecting the diversity of African diaspora communities across Leicester and Leicestershire.

What stood out most was the sense of connection. People were not simply attending, they were actively shaping the day. Stories were shared, traditions were passed on, and everyday cultural practices were brought into the open in a way that felt natural and inclusive.

This reflects a key part of the Afro Heritage Project.

The work focuses on documenting history while also recognising the importance of lived experience, from food and language to memory, migration journeys and community traditions. Events like this create space for those experiences to be seen, heard and valued.

The project continues to work with communities across Leicester and Leicestershire to capture oral histories, support cultural activities and strengthen a shared understanding of African diaspora heritage in the region.

As the project develops, these moments, conversations, activities and shared meals, form part of a wider story that reflects the richness and diversity of local communities.

If you are interested in being part of the Afro Heritage Project, whether through sharing your story, attending events or contributing to community-led activities, we would welcome you to get involved.
