About the Afro Heritage Project
The Afro Heritage Project is a two-year community heritage initiative led by Afro Innovation Group (AIG). Supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the project will uncover and celebrate the migration stories of African communities in Leicester, from the 1940s to the present day.
By recording oral histories, curating exhibitions and creating a digital archive, the project will ensure African heritage is recognised as a vital part of Leicester’s shared cultural history.
The Role
The Digital Content Producer will take the lead on creating, editing and managing all digital outputs for the Afro Heritage Project. This includes oral history recordings, video and audio content, photography and the design of an online archive that will preserve and showcase African heritage in Leicester for years to come.
You will work closely with the Heritage Officer, volunteers and community partners to co-create multimedia content, ensuring it is high-quality, inclusive and accessible to a wide audience.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and manage digital content for the project website, social media and online exhibition spaces.
Edit and produce video and audio materials, including oral histories, promotional films and event recordings.
Ensure all digital outputs are accessible (captions, subtitles, alt text, translations).
Support digitisation, cataloguing and secure storage of photos, documents and artefacts.
Collaborate with volunteers and partners on digital storytelling.
Maintain secure backups and file management systems in line with archiving best practice.
Contribute to the design and launch of an online archive/microsite for the project.
Provide training and support for volunteers in digital editing and storytelling.
Monitor digital engagement and report on reach, accessibility and impact.
Person Specification
Essential:
Experience in digital content creation and multimedia editing (audio, video, web).
Proficiency with tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, Audacity or Final Cut Pro.
Understanding of digital accessibility and inclusive design principles.
Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Experience in community, heritage or cultural projects.
Desirable:
Knowledge of digital archiving, metadata and file management.
Familiarity with African diaspora heritage or digital storytelling.
Experience managing websites, social media campaigns or digital exhibitions.
Ability to train and support non-technical users.
Why This Role Matters
This role is central to ensuring the Afro Heritage Project has a lasting digital legacy. The stories collected will live beyond the project itself, inspiring future generations and connecting Leicester’s African communities with wider audiences.
