About the Afro Heritage Project
Afro Innovation Group (AIG) is a Leicester-based charity supporting refugees, asylum seekers and migrants, particularly those from African and Black and minoritised backgrounds. For nearly 20 years, AIG has delivered advocacy, welfare, and cultural programmes to promote resilience, social justice, and inclusion.
The Afro Heritage Project, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, is a two-year initiative dedicated to preserving and celebrating the migration and settlement stories of Leicester’s African diaspora, from the 1940s onwards.
The Role
The Heritage Officer will coordinate the delivery of the Afro Heritage Project’s heritage activities. This includes oral histories, community workshops, exhibitions, and the development of educational resources.
You will work closely with the Project Director, Digital Content Producer and community partners to make sure stories are recorded ethically, preserved securely and shared widely through creative public programmes.
Key Responsibilities
Coordinate oral history interviews and provide support for participants.
Plan and deliver workshops, exhibitions and outreach events.
Manage the collection, documentation and archiving of oral histories and cultural materials.
Work with schools, community groups and local organisations to ensure inclusive participation.
Support the development of educational toolkits and digital content.
Train and support volunteers in heritage collection and storytelling.
Ensure ethical handling and secure storage of heritage content.
Contribute to communications, including social media, newsletters and web content.
Maintain accurate records and support project monitoring and evaluation.
Person Specification
Essential:
Experience in community engagement, heritage or cultural programming.
Excellent organisational and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work collaboratively with diverse communities.
Strong written communication and attention to detail.
Commitment to equality, diversity, inclusion and safeguarding.
Desirable:
Familiarity with oral history or archival practice.
Experience in heritage or cultural work within Leicester or the Midlands.
Knowledge of African diaspora histories and lived experiences.
Why This Role Matters
African heritage has shaped Leicester for generations, but remains underrepresented in the city’s public history. This role will help ensure those stories are recorded, celebrated and passed on, giving future generations the chance to learn from and be inspired by them.
How to Apply
To apply, please send your CV and a covering letter explaining how you meet the person specification to info@afroinno.org.
