About the Afro Heritage Project
The Afro Heritage Project is a two-year initiative led by Afro Innovation Group (AIG), a Leicester-based charity with nearly 20 years’ experience supporting refugees, migrants and African diaspora communities.
Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the project will uncover, preserve and celebrate the stories of African communities who have made Leicester their home since the 1940s. Through oral histories, archives, workshops and exhibitions, we will ensure these voices are recognised as an essential part of Leicester’s shared history.
The Role
The Community Engagement Coordinator will play a central role in making sure the project is truly community-led. You will build meaningful relationships with diverse African diaspora groups across Leicester, ensuring their lived experiences shape the design and delivery of the project. From outreach and recruitment to co-designing activities and supporting participation, you will help create safe, inclusive spaces where people can share their stories, skills and heritage with confidence.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and maintain relationships with community groups, partners and stakeholders.
Recruit and support participants, volunteers and organisations involved in heritage activities.
Coordinate outreach efforts including promotional events, consultations, and community info sessions.
Facilitate inclusive engagement by removing barriers to participation and providing culturally relevant communication.
Work with colleagues to ensure community voice is reflected in workshops, exhibitions, oral histories and digital outputs.
Support the planning and delivery of storytelling sessions, cultural events and exhibitions.
Maintain accurate records of engagement and contribute to monitoring and evaluation.
Represent the project at forums, meetings and feedback sessions.
Assist in the development of communications and outreach materials.
Person Specification
Essential:
Experience in community outreach, development or engagement.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills in multicultural settings.
Proven ability to engage and motivate diverse and underrepresented communities.
Good organisational and relationship management skills.
Commitment to inclusivity, cultural sensitivity and safeguarding.
Desirable:
Knowledge of Leicester’s African diaspora communities.
Experience in heritage, cultural or arts projects.
Fluency in one or more African community languages.
Why This Role Matters
African heritage has long been underrepresented in Leicester’s public history. By joining us, you will help ensure these stories are not only recorded but celebrated, strengthening cultural identity, connecting generations and creating a lasting legacy for the city.
How to Apply
To apply, please send your CV and a covering letter explaining how you meet the person specification to info@afroinno.org.
